Dr. Bassem Andrawes, a structural engineering professor and entrepreneur, started SMA CORES Inc. in 2020 as the first company in the U.S. with the mission of revolutionizing the construction industry through the application of shape memory alloys (SMAs). The ever-growing challenge facing infrastructure calls for innovative ideas that will reshape the future of the industry. Our company specializes in developing and testing new and innovative SMA products that are specifically designed to serve the needs of our customers from the construction industry for both new and existing structures. Our products are backed up with more than two decades of research ranging from material testing to large-scale structural testing. Our drive stems from our strong passion for structural engineering and our scientifically and technically-backed belief in the SMA technology and its potential to offer unparalleled solutions to the construction industry.
About Us
Bassem Andrawes, Ph.D. & P.E. is the founder and CEO of SMA CORES (Shape Memory Alloys for the Construction of Resilient Engineered Systems) Inc. As a graduate student of Georgia Tech then a professor of structural engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Dr. Andrawes has never stopped studying the fascinating material of SMA. Through several research grants including the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER award and the hard work of many students, Dr. Andrawes was able to bring SMA structural ideas to life. His ideas for using SMAs in seismic retrofitting, concrete prestressing, and structural repair resulted in over 100 publications and presentations in addition to two patents. Over the last 20 years, Dr. Andrawes kept chasing his dream of pushing the field of structural engineering to a whole new level of innovation through introducing the technology of SMA. SMAs are already in use by other engineering fields, but it has yet to be tailored to the very specific needs of the construction industry. This demand motivated Dr. Andrawes to start his own company to develop and commercialize proof-tested SMA construction products to address the shortcomings of existing construction materials. Through SMA CORES, and the application of SMAs, Dr. Andrawes strives to expand infrastructure resilience & sustainability.
